Argentina, located in the southeast part of the South America, is one of the most distance countries from China.
In July 2023, a train ran on the Argentine Belgrano freight railway, carrying agricultural products of the country to the port and then selling them all over the world. All locomotives, steel rails and sleepers for this railway are from China which is 20,000 kilometers away. The renovation of the railway helps Argentina remove its barriers to the major transport artery, shortening the distance between even the most distant countries on the Earth.
Argentina is rich in natural resources and is reputed as the “world granary and meat capital”. However, due to its backward railway transport and high road transport costs, Argentine agricultural products have no price advantages in the international market. The Belgrano freight railway, which was initially built in 1876, is an important transport corridor in Argentina’s crop growing areas. However, as it has not been repaired for years, the railway, which had originally a length of more than 7,000 kilometers, has mostly fallen into disuse, except for a section with a length of several hundred kilometers.
In February 2022, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Argentina, China and Argentina officially signed an MOU for cooperation under the “Belt and Road" Initiative. Now, more and more Argentine beef, fresh fruits and seafoods have appeared on the dining tables of Chinese consumers, and China has become one of the most important trade partners of Argentina and a major country of destination of Argentine agricultural products.
In June 2023, the first phase of the project was successfully completed. The “reborn” century-old railway links the crop growing areas and the port, shortening the travelling time from three days and three nights to less than one day and providing residents along the railway with more than 4,800 opportunities of direct employment.

Even mountains and seas cannot distance people with common aspirations. As a Latin American proverb goes, “a true friend touches your heart from the other side of the world”. The friendly cooperation between China and Argentina will keep pooling the strengths for jointly moving forward the Belt and Road Initiative.
