On January 23, Fang Yanshui, General Manager of China Machinery Engineering Group Corporation (CMEC Group), met at CMEC Group Headquarters (China Machinery Engineering Corporation, or CMEC) with a delegation led by Delvin O’Neale Thoma, Minister for Ronphos of Nauru, and Russ Kun, Deputy Minister of the Department of Finance of Nauru. The two sides held candid and pragmatic discussions on topics including financing arrangements for the expansion and upgrading of Nauru’s phosphate mining project, and jointly expressed their hope for the project to commence as soon as possible.

Fang Yanshui extended a warm welcome to the visiting delegation from Nauru’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Environment and Department of Finance, and expressed sincere gratitude to the Nauruan government and relevant departments for their longstanding trust and support for CMEC Group. During the meeting, Fang noted that the Republic of Nauru Phosphate Corporation (RONPhos) plays a vital role in Nauru’s socio-economic development. He emphasized that CMEC Group attaches great importance to its partnership with Nauru and stands ready to work hand in hand with RONPhos to support the upgrading of its infrastructure and the development of its industry.

Minister Thoma, speaking on behalf of the Nauruan delegation, conveyed heartfelt appreciation for CMEC Group’s dedicated efforts and steadfast support in this cooperative project. He stressed that phosphate mining is a pillar industry for Nauru, and affirmed that the Nauruan government—through coordinated support from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Environment, the Department of Finance, and other relevant agencies—will provide full backing to ensure the project’s success. He expressed the hope that CMEC Group will effectively integrate and optimize its resources to achieve early project commissioning and tangible benefits for local development.

Following the talks, the Finance Management Department of CMEC Group Headquarters organized a financing coordination meeting between the Nauruan delegation and relevant financial institutions. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on financing and insurance coverage proposals for the project.
