At the beginning of 2025, CMEC signed a general contracting agreement for the K. Gulhifalhu Roads and Municipal Infrastructure Development Project with the Ministry of National Planning, Housing & Infrastructure of the Republic of Maldives at the Presidential Palace. The contract is valued at approximately US$400 million.
Mr. Xie Ke, Vice General Manager of CMEC Group, and President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives attended the signing ceremony, discussing further cooperation.
At the signing ceremony, Mr. Xie, on behalf of CMEC Group, expressed gratitude to President Muizzu for his personal reception. He reviewed the work carried out since President Muizzu witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation on the K. Gulhifalhu Roads and Municipal Infrastructure Development Project with Zhang Xiaolun, Chairman of SINOMACH, during his state visit to China in January 2024. He thanked President Muizzu and the Maldivian government for their strong support for CMEC Group's operations in the Maldives. Xie stated that CMEC Group will seize this opportunity to maximize its strengths, showcase the capabilities of SINOMACH, and promote the high-quality implementation of the BRI, contributing to the social and economic prosperity of the Maldives.
President Muizzu congratulated the successful signing of the K. Gulhifalhu Roads and Municipal Infrastructure Development Project and highly praised CMEC Group's comprehensive "one-stop" service capability, which leads with design consulting and covers the entire engineering contracting industry chain. He noted that CMEC Group has implemented several high-quality livelihood projects in the Maldives, including 4,000 housing units and supporting facilities, the Hulhumale Phase II power distribution system, municipal roads, and photovoltaic projects. These have significantly improved local residents' living conditions and provided replicable models for the full utilization of renewable energy in the Maldives, earning widespread acclaim. President Muizzu looks forward to extensive cooperation with CMEC Group in infrastructure, livelihood, green development, and clean energy, contributing more to the Maldives' prosperity.
In the presence of both parties, CMEC Group and the Maldives jointly signed the general contracting agreement for the K. Gulhifalhu Roads and Municipal Infrastructure Development Project.
The project involves infrastructure such as power transmission and transformation, roads, and municipal pipelines. Its successful implementation will drive the export of a large number of Chinese construction-related goods and equipment to the Maldives, enhancing trade between China and the Maldives. It is the first economic and trade cooperation project signed after the official implementation of the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement, marking a pioneering and milestone significance. It lays a solid foundation for a new round of economic and trade cooperation between China and the Maldives and will become an important support for the Maldives' sustainable development. The project will effectively alleviate the congestion in the capital city Malé, improve residents' living conditions, and further promote urbanization and economic development in the Maldives.
