Wang Bo Attends the Third China-Indian Ocean Region Blue Economy Development Cooperation Forum
On December 15th, Wang Bo, SINOMACH’s Assistant General Manager and CMEC Group’s Party Secretary and Chairman, was invited to attend the "Third China-Indian Ocean Region Blue Economy Development Cooperation Forum." Themed "The Future of the Blue Indian Ocean — Development Practices of the Global South," the forum was co-hosted by China's International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), the People's Government of Yunnan Province, the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources of Maldives, and the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification, Green and Blue Economy of Barbados.
Deputy Director Zhao Fengtao of CIDCA and Vice Governor Liu Yong of Yunnan Province delivered opening remarks. Wang Bo participated in a dialogue between Chinese and foreign government officials and enterprises on the topic of "Cultural Exchanges Promoting Marine Cultural Tourism" and gave a keynote speech.
In his introduction, Wang Bo explained that SINOMACH is a central state-owned large backbone enterprise and a Fortune Global 500 company. Originating from the establishment of the First Ministry of Mechanical Industry of China in August 1952, it rightfully claims to be one of the earliest planners and builders of China’s mechanical industry. It has undertaken the construction of well-known industrial infrastructures such as FAW, SAW, CFHI, CNEG, and YTO. SINOMACH was also among the first national teams to venture abroad, expanding its business from initial import-export operations to engineering procurement construction (EPC) and now offering comprehensive engineering services across the entire industrial chain with a focus on promoting overseas industrialization.
CMEC Group’s member enterprises CMEC and CAMCE were two of the earliest companies under the Ministry of Mechanical Industry to go global. They have since become outstanding enterprises with the widest coverage of overseas marketing networks along the "Belt and Road" initiative and the highest degree of international operation.
Wang Bo highlighted and showcased four specialized capabilities of CMEC Group in the "Blue Economy":
1. Marine Science Research Capabilities. IPPR, a member enterprise of CMEC Group, has been deeply involved in national marine science research, providing design consulting and engineering services for major marine science projects. Notable projects include the Ocean University of China’s Life Science and Technology Center and Deep Sea Exploration Center, and the CAS Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering in Sanya, Hainan. Since completed, these projects have become shared open platforms for deep-sea R&D trials, filling a gap in China's deep-sea scientific research facilities.
2. Engineering Consulting and Design Services for Coastal Resort Hotels. CMEC Group has made significant contributions to the construction of Hainan International Tourism Island by designing and building over 60 high-end resort hotel projects, forming an essential support for tourism in Hainan’s international free trade port. IPPR has emerged as a well-known brand in the consulting and design of resort hotels.
3. Creative Design and Engineering Service Capabilities for Island Characteristic Cultural Tourism Facilities. By delving into local island culture and history, CMEC Group has completed a series of integrated cultural tourism projects that combine marine elements, humanities, history, and entertainment, enhancing the competitiveness and soft power of tourist cities.
4. Capabilities in Marine Economy and Livelihood Improvement Projects. CMEC Group has undertaken numerous fisheries infrastructure projects, holding more than 70% market share. It has also executed livelihood improvement projects such as Harrow International School Haikou, Hainan Ecological Software Park, the Hainan Branch of the Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital, and the Hainan Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which have significantly improved residents' education, healthcare, and elderly care.
Wang Bo shared with the audience the Veligandu Tourist Complex project in the Maldives carried out by CNEEC, which is one of the largest projects in recent years in the field of Sino-Maldivian blue economy cooperation. With a total construction area of 160,000 square meters and over 1,000 rooms across five different levels of hotels and apartments, this project fully interprets and embodies the "local customs and traditions" and "marine culture" of the Maldives. Once operational, it is expected to receive 500,000 tourists annually, generating a direct economic income of $200 million per year for the local area and creating 1,600 new jobs.
SINOMACH placed great importance on this forum, actively participating in various exchange activities during the event and achieving positive outcomes. The excellent performance and capabilities of CMEC Group in marine science and economic cooperation were widely recognized and praised by attendees.
Officials from the Operation Management Department of CMEC Group and IPPR also attended the forum activities.
