On the afternoon of April 12, Han Xiaojun, Party Secretary of CMEC, attended the Handover Celebration of CMEC Friendship Middle School aided by CMEC. Wang Yili, Assistant to the President, and other relevant officials attended the ceremony. Representatives of the villagers in DHANNI village where the school was located and more than 200 students from primary and secondary schools spontaneously participated in the Handover Celebration. Mr. Han Xiaojun, Sadiq Abbasi, Head of DHANNI Village, and student representatives successively addressed the school handover ceremony and donated school supplies such as schoolbags and popular science books to the local students.

When the delegation led by Party Secretary Han Xiaojun arrived at the school gate, the villagers warmly garlanded Mr. Han Xiaojun with flowers which symbolized auspiciousness. The primary and secondary school students jumped about happily with innocent smiles on their faces.

During the ceremony, Mr. Han Xiaojun pointed out that CMEC’s donation of the Friendship Middle School was CMEC’s deep-hearted requital to the Government of Pakistan and its people. The Friendship Middle School effectively solved the problem of lacking local educational resources, which embodied CMEC’s philosophy and pursuit of “achieving happier lives for people around the world”. He stressed that Pakistan as a traditional market for CMEC, witnessed the glorious journey of CMEC’s growth and expansion over the past four decades. In the future, CMEC must follow the overall arrangements of China’s “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor” and the building of a China-Pakistan community of common destiny. In addition, CMEC should continue to base itself on Pakistan’s infrastructure market, upgrade Pakistan’s industrialization level, and be committed to serving the all-round and mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Pakistan. Therefore, more tangible benefits will be delivered to the people of the two countries, and the vision of “building a project to erect a monument and finally to benefit the people” will be fully accomplished.

Mr. Han Xiaojun received a joint interview of Xinhua News Agency, People’s Daily and local media there. He said that due to the serious destruction of the original school building caused by the South Asia Earthquake in 2005 and the lack of funds, it had not been effectively repaired. In order to guarantee the earthquake resistance of the new school building, CMEC conducted in-depth research and detailed comparison while designing, and purchased the best quality construction materials from domestic and foreign markets, so as to ensure that the earthquake resistance of the new school building could reach Level-VIII Earthquake Resistance Standards.

CMEC Friendship Middle School, about 35km from the life camp of Pakistan-Based N-J Hydropower Project built by CMEC, is located in DHANNI Village in the northeast of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Kashmir, and covers an area of about 10,000 square meters. The number of classrooms before the renovation was very small. There were 140 students in the school but only six classrooms were available. Sometimes one classroom was crammed with students from two or three grades, and what’s worse, some classes had no choice but to take lessons in the hallway. After the reconstruction, the new school houses a total of 18 rooms (including 12 classrooms, several offices and a conference room), and can accommodate up to 400 students from 12 classes, which largely improves the school’s scale and greatly facilitates the school-age children in nearby villages to start school.

When the Friendship Middle School is completed and put into use, it will effectively solve the problem of the long-term lack of local educational resources and help improve the local people’s livelihood. Moreover, it will also become a model project for the Chinese enterprises to deepen the traditional friendship between China and Pakistan.
